Short Sharp Shanties
with Tom & Barbara Brown
& Jim Mageean
A special presentation of their new project chronicling the life and times of John Short (Yankee Jack) 1839-1933.
John Short was born in the West Country town of Watchet and was employed as a Shantyman
from the mid nineteenth Century onwards, sailing all over the world.
In 1914 he met Cecil Sharp who collected over 60 Shanties from Yankee Jack, many of them in an earlier form
than those subsequently made popular by Stan Hugill. This account of Short's life and work is interspersed
with songs from Tom & Barbara and a new 3 C.D. set is available featuring many of the Shanties discussed
and also featuring many artists from previous Harwich Shanty Festivals!
Jim Mageean is joining Tom & Barbara for this presentation as he worked with them on the C.Ds.
There will be time allotted for a question and answer session at the end
